League of Legends is a relatively lightweight game — but "relatively" is the keyword. In teamfights with 10 champions, towers exploding, and ability effects stacking up, even modern PCs can stutter. And when that happens during the decisive teamfight of the match, you feel it in your rank.

Why Does LoL Freeze During Teamfights?

LoL uses a proprietary graphics engine from Riot, optimized for low GPU usage. The bottleneck is almost always the CPU — especially in teamfights where many particle effects are being processed simultaneously.

  • Each ability effect is processed individually by the CPU
  • Teamfights with 10 champions can have dozens of simultaneous particles
  • A system with high DPC Latency will choke exactly at that moment
  • Background processes that wake up during the game cause CPU spikes at the worst possible time

LoL Settings for More FPS

  • Character Quality: Very Low
  • Environment Quality: Very Low
  • Effects Quality: Low (don't disable it — it affects ability visibility)
  • Shadow Quality: No Shadows
  • Frame Rate Cap: Benchmark (unlimited) or 2x your refresh rate
  • Wait for Vertical Sync: Disabled
  • Anti-Aliasing: Disabled
  • HUD Scale: can be slightly reduced for an FPS gain

Windows Tweaks for LoL

Close the LoL Client After Entering a Match

The League client (Riot Client) keeps running in the background during matches, consuming RAM and CPU. You can close the client process after the game starts with no impact on the match.

Disable Windows Defender During Matches

Windows Defender scans files in real time and can scan LoL files during the game, causing CPU spikes. Set up exclusions for the League of Legends folder in Windows Defender.

Properly Configured Virtual Memory

PCs with 8GB of RAM need a well-configured paging file for LoL. If Windows manages it automatically, it can resize the file during the game — causing the classic stutter. Configure it manually with a fixed size.

LoL on a Low-End PC: What Actually Works

For PCs with 4-8GB RAM and an older CPU:

  • Resolution: 1280x720 or even 1024x576 (League scales well at low resolutions)
  • Borderless windowed mode can be more stable than fullscreen on older PCs
  • Disable all client effects (lobby animations, etc.)
  • Use the client's low-spec hardware mode

With UPBOOST optimization, LoL players on modest PCs report consistent FPS above 60 even in intense teamfights, and elimination of the stutters that previously appeared under heavy load.
