The pattern is always similar. You join the match with 200 frames per second, everything smooth. A few minutes pass and the number starts falling. Twenty minutes later you are at 90, the mouse feels heavy, and nothing changed in your settings.
This is not a coincidence, nor "the game getting heavier". It is your PC reducing its own performance on purpose — and there are only a few reasons for it to do that.
1. Thermal protection: the most common cause
Processors and graphics cards have a temperature limit. When they get close to it, the hardware itself lowers its working frequency to cool down. That is protection, not a defect — but the effect is exactly FPS falling on its own.
How to recognise it: the drop is gradual and always happens after a few minutes. Restarting the game helps for a while, then it comes back. If you stop for 15 minutes and return, it starts good again.
What is usually behind it:
- Dried-out thermal paste — under heavy use it lasts 2 to 3 years
- Cooler and fins clogged with dust
- Case with poor airflow or pushed against a wall
- Laptop used on a bed, sofa or lap, with the air intakes blocked
2. Laptop on battery or with a weak charger
A laptop in battery mode reduces performance aggressively, sometimes by half. Worse: if the charger does not deliver enough power for heavy gaming (common with generic USB-C chargers), the laptop draws from the battery even while plugged in and enters the same power-saving mode.

3. Memory filling up during the match
Some games use more memory as the match goes on. If RAM is tight, Windows starts using the disk as memory and FPS collapses. Here the drop tends to be more abrupt than the thermal one, and comes with freezes alongside it.
4. A program waking up in the background
Windows Update, antivirus scan, cloud sync, a game updating in another store. All of them consume CPU and disk without warning. If the FPS drop matches a specific time of day or a PC that has been on for a long time, this is the most likely suspect.
5. Frequency oscillating because of the power plan
This one is subtle and goes unnoticed. On the balanced plan, Windows keeps adjusting processor frequency up and down all the time. The result is not just lower FPS — it is unstable FPS, oscillating non-stop even with a cool PC and nothing else open.
How to know which one is yours
You can separate them by behaviour:
- Falls gradually after a few minutes, recovers when it cools → temperature
- Falls the moment you unplug it → power/battery
- Falls abruptly and freezes too → memory or disk
- Oscillates all the time, even from the start → power plan and frequency stability
That last point deserves attention because it is the only one that never shows up in a regular FPS overlay. To see it you need to measure throughput stability under load — how well the processor keeps the same pace from start to finish of a continuous workload. A healthy, well-configured PC keeps throughput almost constant. A PC with a limited power plan and parked cores oscillates a lot, and that oscillation is exactly what you feel as unstable FPS.
What actually fixes it
- Maximum performance power plan, with minimum frequency locked and core parking disabled
- Physical cleaning and, if the PC has more than two years of heavy use, new thermal paste
- Laptop always plugged in, with the original charger, resting on a hard surface
- Background software under control — not brutally disabled, but configured not to wake up during gaming hours
- System tweaks that reduce interruptions and keep the processor at a constant pace

It can. A new PC with poor airflow, an overly closed case or installed in a tight spot heats up the same way. On new laptops it is even more common, because internal space is small and the cooler is shared between processor and graphics card.
