Fortnite Input Lag: How to Actually Reduce the Delay

Builds and edits coming out late in Fortnite? Here are the settings that genuinely cut input lag — and why Performance Mode does not always help.

In Fortnite, input lag shows up in a specific way: you press to build and the wall appears half a beat later. You edit and the piece takes its time. In a build fight, that decides the match.

The good news is that Fortnite has its own latency reduction tools and they work well. The bad news is that one of the most widely recommended settings can make your case worse.

Why Fortnite is different

Fortnite leans heavily on the CPU, and in a build fight it leans even harder. Every piece placed is a new object that must be created, synced with the server and drawn.

That changes where the bottleneck sits. In many games you improve latency by lowering graphics. In Fortnite, during heavy building, lowering graphics helps less than expected — because what is overloaded is the CPU, not the graphics card.

Reflex: the most direct gain

On an NVIDIA card, this is the highest-return setting. Fortnite's implementation is considered one of the best out there.

It shrinks the queue of frames the GPU keeps prepared. Without it, the frame on screen was calculated before your most recent command.

There are two levels. The Boost mode keeps latency low even under heavy load, at the cost of slightly higher GPU power draw — and heavy load is exactly the build-fight scenario.

AMD cards have an equivalent feature under a different name, in the driver panel.

Performance Mode: careful with this one

Here is the most recommended and worst explained setting.

Performance Mode drastically reduces visual quality and delivers a higher average FPS. It sounds like an obvious call — except there is a real trade-off: it can cause stutter on balanced systems because it underutilizes the GPU and pushes even more weight onto the CPU, which in Fortnite is already the bottleneck.

The rule of thumb: Performance Mode is built for genuinely low-end hardware. If your PC is mid-range or better, test both — and compare stability, not just the average number.

A higher average FPS with stutter is worse for latency than a lower, steady one.

The settings that matter

Turn VSync off. It holds finished frames waiting on the monitor. One of the biggest avoidable sources of delay, and enabled by default on many installs.

Shadows off. Of the graphics options, it costs the most and delivers the least competitively.

Effects and post-processing at minimum. Besides costing performance, they hurt scene readability.

Check the monitor refresh rate in Windows. A high refresh monitor stuck at 60 Hz is a common and expensive mistake: you wait up to 16.7 ms on the display alone.

Frame cap: less is more

It sounds backwards, but this is the adjustment that most improves how the game feels.

FPS swinging wildly — 300 one moment, 150 the next — is worse than a lower, steady number. The variation makes the time between frames change constantly, and the result is that sense that the game "does not respond the same way twice".

The strategy pro players use: find the FPS your machine sustains in the worst case and cap there or just below. You give up the peak and gain consistency — which is what your hand actually notices.

When the delay is not your PC

Worth separating, because the sensation is similar.

If builds come out late but the cursor responds fine, and the delay varies through the match, it may be the network. Fortnite validates much of the action server-side, so high or unstable ping shows up as commands that take their time.

The tell: PC input lag is constant and identical in solo practice. Network delay varies and disappears when you test offline.

The order that pays

  1. Monitor refresh rate in Windows — free
  2. VSync off
  3. Reflex on, Boost mode if your card can take it
  4. Shadows, effects and post-processing at minimum
  5. Frame cap at what your machine sustains in the worst case
  6. Performance Mode — test it, do not assume
  7. Power plan and background processes

The first five are free and take under ten minutes. If delay remains after that, the subject moves to Windows configuration underneath — which is where the rest usually is.
