Marvel Rivals has a performance profile that confuses many people: average FPS looks fine, but the game hitches at specific moments — when a new ability enters the scene, when a lot happens at once, or right in the first matches after an update.
That is not random. There is an explanation, and much of it has a solution.
Why it hitches
Shader compilation
This is cause number one for stutters in modern games, and this one is no exception. Each visual effect must be prepared the first time it appears. Since the game has many characters with visually distinct abilities, you keep encountering new effects for several matches.
The result: it stutters more at the start, improves over time, and stutters again after every major update, because the preparation is redone. If stuttering returned right after a patch, that is it — and it passes.
Many simultaneous effects
In a six-versus-six team with abilities firing at the same time, the amount of on-screen effects explodes. That is the moment when more modest cards fall behind.

The settings worth changing
In order of return:
- Visual effects and post-processing: lower these first. They are exactly what saturates the screen in combat.
- Shadows: expensive and barely relevant competitively. Medium or low.
- Reflections: if there is a ray tracing option, turn it off — the cost is very high for a fast-paced game.
- Image reconstruction: enable it. Big gain with small visual loss in a fast-moving game.
- Textures: adjust according to your card memory. With 6 GB or less, do not leave them maxed.
An extra tweak that helps how it feels: cap FPS slightly below what your machine sustains. It sounds counterintuitive, but a constant frametime at 110 frames feels better than oscillating between 90 and 140.
Stuttering that is not the game
If hitching continues after all of that, separate the cases:
- Stutters with high FPS, randomly → system interrupts, timer, power plan
- Stutters always at the same spot → data loading; the game on an SSD solves much of it
- Stutters after a while playing → temperature
- Characters teleporting → not FPS, that is the network
That last one deserves attention: in a fast team game, network jitter is mistaken for stuttering all the time. The difference is that with a network problem the world jumps, while with a performance problem the whole image freezes for an instant.
The basics that fix more than graphics settings
- Close the browser and recording software before playing
- Disable overlays — in games with many effects they are costly
- Maximum performance power plan
- Updated graphics driver, clean install
- Game installed on an SSD
