Every gamer has run into these programs: you click a button, a progress bar appears, and at the end a green screen says the PC has been optimised. Some are free, others charge, and several have thousands of followers on YouTube and TikTok.
The question that matters is simple: what do they actually do? The honest answer has three parts — what works, what is theatre and what is risk.
What these programs do that genuinely works
Credit where it is due: part of what they apply is legitimate and does improve performance.
- Switching the power plan to high performance — a real tweak and one of the most effective
- Turning off Game DVR and background capture — gives back resources spent recording footage you never watch
- Cleaning temporary files — does not raise FPS, but frees space, and a full SSD really does lose speed
- Closing background processes — helps on PCs with little memory
- Network tweaks such as removing packet throttling — legitimate
If a program does only this, it delivers some gain. Not magic — just the basics done right.

- "RAM boosters" / memory optimisers: they force programs to release memory Windows was already managing. The practical result is the system having to reload those things afterwards — so it can even make things worse.
- "Registry cleaning": orphan registry keys do not cost performance. This feature has existed since the 2000s and has never shown a proven effect on FPS.
- "Defragment SSD": SSDs are not defragmented. Doing it only burns write cycles for nothing.
- Generic progress bars: many display an "optimising" animation that lasts longer than the actual process, because the perception of work sells better than the work.
- Invented gain figures: "+300% performance" with no real before-and-after measurement.
The risks nobody puts in the advertising
- Disabling services en masse: the most dangerous one. Programs that shut down dozens of services at once often break printers, Bluetooth, sound, VPN or even the Windows Store. And since the user does not know what was disabled, the only way out becomes reinstalling Windows.
- No way back: most do not save the previous state. If something goes wrong, there is no undo button.
- Modified "gamer" Windows: alternative systems with hundreds of components removed do deliver real gains — but you lose security updates, risk incompatibility, and depending on the source, have no idea what else was changed in the image.
- The same configuration for everyone: the same tweak package is applied to an entry-level laptop and a high-end desktop. A tweak that helps one machine can hurt the other — disabling CPU idle states, for example, is reasonable on a desktop and terrible on a laptop.
How to judge an optimiser before using it
Three questions settle it:
- Does it show what it will change, before changing? If it does not list the tweaks, you are handing over your system blindfolded.
- Does it create a restore point or backup? Without a rollback, any mistake means reinstalling Windows.
- Does it measure before and after? Without measurement, "optimised" is just a word on screen. A gain that is not measured does not exist — it is a feeling.
Where human work comes in
The difference between an automated script and a technician is not knowledge of the tweaks — most are public. The difference is diagnosis: knowing which ones to apply on that specific machine, and why.
A PC with 8 GB of RAM and a mechanical hard drive needs different things from one with 32 GB and a fast SSD. A laptop needs different decisions from a desktop because of thermals. A machine with a problematic network driver needs that driver handled, not fifty services blindly disabled.
