Why Low-End PCs Suffer More from a Poorly Configured Windows
On powerful PCs, background processes consume a small fraction of total resources. On low-end PCs, those same processes can represent 30-50% of available CPU and RAM. The difference between a well-optimized low-end PC and a poorly optimized one can be double the FPS.
RAM: The Most Critical Resource on Low-End PCs
Free Up RAM Before Gaming
Before opening any game, close absolutely everything: browser (Chrome eats RAM for breakfast — up to 500MB per tab), Discord, Spotify, OneDrive — anything in the system tray. With 4GB of RAM, every MB counts.
Configure Virtual Memory Correctly
With limited RAM, Windows uses the disk as an extension of RAM (paging file). If Windows manages this automatically, it can resize the file during gameplay, causing horrible stutters.
Configure it manually: System Properties → Advanced Settings → Performance → Advanced → Change. Uncheck "Automatically manage." Set initial and maximum size = 1.5x your RAM (e.g., 4GB RAM → 6000MB).
Disable Background Apps
Settings → Privacy → Background Apps → disable everything. Microsoft Store apps remain "alive" in the background even when you're not using them.
CPU: Squeezing the Most Out of Older Processors
Correct Power Plan
On older CPUs, the "Balanced" plan is particularly harmful because the power manager takes longer to bring the CPU to maximum frequency. Use High Performance to keep the CPU at peak at all times.

Disable Startup Programs
Every program that starts with Windows occupies a CPU core for a few seconds. On a dual-core i3, this can freeze the system for 2-3 minutes after boot. Task Manager → Startup → disable everything except GPU driver and antivirus.
Disable Windows Visual Effects
System Properties → Performance → Adjust for best performance. This disables Windows animations and frees up integrated GPU and CPU resources for the game.
Integrated GPU: Configuring for Maximum Output
If you're using Intel UHD or AMD Radeon integrated graphics (no dedicated card):
- Update drivers directly from the Intel/AMD website, not through Windows Update
- In the Intel Graphics panel, enable maximum performance mode
- Resolution reduction is the most effective tweak: 1366x768 instead of 1920x1080 can triple your FPS
- Disable Vsync in all games — integrated GPUs can't handle the Vsync overhead
