In GTA RP there is a critical moment that does not exist in other games: joining the city. That is when FiveM downloads hundreds of megabytes of content, loads scripts and syncs everything with the server. It is also where nearly every error happens.
The list below covers the most frequent cases, with the reason behind each one — because understanding the reason stops you from repeating random fixes from YouTube videos.
Stuck on loading and going nowhere
The most common case. The join screen freezes at some percentage and never advances.
Most of the time the culprit is the cache. FiveM stores content from every city you have visited, and one corrupted file in that pile stalls loading. Clearing the cache folder solves a good share of cases.
Careful when clearing: delete only the cache, not the whole FiveM folder, or you lose your settings. And know that the next join will take longer, because everything is downloaded again — that is normal, not the error returning.
Connection error with the platform servers
Messages about handshake or authentication failure mean FiveM could not validate your session. The causes, in order:

- Antivirus or firewall blocking it — FiveM communicates in a way some antivirus software considers suspicious. Adding the folder as an exception fixes it.
- Momentary platform instability — it happens, and in that case you just wait.
- Provider blocking the route — rarer, but it occurs with some ISPs.
Closes by itself during loading
If FiveM closes mid-load with no message, it is almost always memory. Joining a heavy city is the peak consumption of the whole process: the base game, plus custom content, plus scripts, all at once.
With 8 GB of RAM, close absolutely everything before joining — especially the browser. And check that the Windows page file is on automatic: those who disabled it believing it would boost performance are exactly the ones who suffer most from this crash.
Base game version error
FiveM depends on the original GTA V. When Rockstar updates the game, FiveM takes time to adjust, and in that window compatibility errors appear. If the error showed up right after a GTA V update, that is probably it — and the fix is waiting for the FiveM update.
Joins, but drops after a few minutes
When the problem is not joining but staying, shift focus:
- Network jitter — RP keeps constant communication with the server; instability drops you
- Video memory overflowing — typical in a crowded city with a 4 GB card
- Temperature — if it always drops after the same amount of time, measure before suspecting anything else
The sequence that resolves fastest
- Clear the FiveM cache
- Add the folder as an antivirus exception
- Verify GTA V files through the store
- Close everything and test with a clean machine
- Check that the page file is on automatic
- Try another city — if another one works, the problem is the server, not you
That last step saves the most time and almost nobody does it. Before reinstalling everything, join a different city. If it works, you have just discovered the problem was never on your PC.
Frequently asked questions
No, as long as you delete only the cache folder and not the whole FiveM folder. The cache stores content downloaded from cities; your settings live elsewhere. The first join after clearing takes longer because everything downloads again — that is expected.
