Anyone who plays GTA RP knows the scene: out in the countryside the game runs smooth, then you reach downtown with thirty people on screen and FPS drops by half. The easy conclusion is "my PC is weak". It is almost always wrong.
FiveM has one characteristic that changes everything: the weight of the game does not come only from your PC, it comes from the server. Each city loads a different set of scripts, vehicles, clothing and custom maps. Two cities on the same PC can perform completely differently.
Why GTA RP is heavier than regular GTA V
- Mods downloaded and loaded in real time: when you join, you receive hundreds of megabytes of custom content that stays in memory.
- Many players in the same place: each character has its own model, outfit and animations. Thirty people on a corner is thirty times that cost.
- Scripts running non-stop: jobs, phone, inventory, custom HUD — all consuming processing continuously.
- GTA V leans heavily on a single core: the engine is old. Having eight cores does not help if the main one is saturated.
That is why GTA RP is a case where processor and memory matter more than the graphics card — the opposite of what most people assume.
Optimisation by city type
Light city (small whitelist, few mods)
Servers with 60 to 100 players and little custom content. Here the bottleneck is usually just graphics settings. Textures on high, shadows on medium, and you play fine on almost any PC from recent years.
Heavy city (many mods, custom map)
Servers with MLOs (custom interiors), hundreds of vehicles and outfits. Here video memory is the limit: if your card has 4 GB, it will overflow in busy areas, and the game starts fetching textures from disk mid-match — which shows up as severe freezing.

The single most effective fix: lower texture quality. Not what you want to hear, but it is what prevents video memory from overflowing. Shadows and reflections come next.
Serious RP city with lots of people in one spot
The problem here is player density. Reducing render distance and NPC population density makes far more difference than touching resolution.
FiveM tweaks that actually work
- Clear the cache periodically: the FiveM cache folder accumulates content from every city you have visited and eventually gets in the way. Clear it every two or three weeks — the cache only, not your configuration files.
- Exclusive fullscreen mode: reduces input lag compared to borderless windowed.
- Do not use extended pools you do not need: some cities require extra memory parameters. If yours does not, leave them off — they consume memory for nothing.
- Watch the game version: FiveM depends on Rockstar's GTA V. A base game update can break performance until mods catch up.
What freezes and is not FiveM
A good share of GTA RP freezing has nothing to do with the game:
- Not enough memory: 8 GB is the absolute minimum for heavy RP, and with the browser closed. 16 GB is comfortable.
- Game on an HDD instead of an SSD: GTA RP loads content constantly. On a mechanical drive, each load turns into a freeze.
- Discord overlay enabled: the Discord overlay is a classic cause of stutter in GTA V, and nearly everyone plays RP with Discord open.
- Ping and jitter: in RP, network jitter shows up as characters teleporting and actions lagging — it looks like freezing, but it is the network.
When the problem is Windows, not the game
If you have tried everything above and the city still freezes, the bottleneck is probably at system level: driver interrupts holding the main core, an imprecise timer, a power plan limiting frequency. Because GTA V depends so heavily on a single core, it is the game that suffers most from this kind of problem — and the one that improves most when it is fixed.
Frequently asked questions
Because each player in front of you loads their own model, outfit and animations, and in GTA RP those items are usually custom and heavier than the originals. If your graphics card is near its memory limit, that is exactly when it overflows and the game starts fetching data from disk, which you feel as freezing.
