Laptop Overheating on GTA RP: Why It Worsens in Long Sessions

The first hour of RP runs fine. The second starts hitching. By the third it is unbearable — and the laptop is scorching.

That pattern is almost exclusive to RP, for a simple reason: GTA RP sessions last hours. Competitive games are twenty-minute matches with breaks between them. RP is continuous, and that completely changes the thermal behaviour.

What is happening

CPU and GPU have a temperature ceiling. On reaching it, the system reduces its own speed to protect itself.

Less speed means fewer frames per second. That is why the drop always comes after a while, never at the start — the machine has to heat up first.

On a laptop this happens far faster than on a desktop. Internal space is tight, the vent is small, and the heat has nowhere to go.

How to confirm it

• The first hour or first matches are good
• The drop always comes around the same point
• The base is hot and the fan is at maximum
• Letting it rest helps, and it degrades again when you return

That last item is the most conclusive. If pausing for half an hour helps temporarily, it is thermal — no other problem behaves that way.

What genuinely helps

Raise the back

The simplest and one of the most effective. A laptop on a flat desk has its air intake almost glued to the surface.

Anything raising it two or three centimetres already improves airflow. It does not need an expensive stand.

Never play with the laptop on a bed or sofa. Fabric blocks the intakes completely, and temperature climbs very fast there.

Clean out the dust

A laptop with a year of use already accumulates enough dust to interfere. At two or three years, the cooler can be practically clogged.

The sign: the fan is loud but the air coming out is weak.

Thermal paste

It dries out over time. On a laptop a few years old, replacing it usually drops temperature considerably — the maintenance with the best return.

A cooling pad

It genuinely helps, unlike several accessories that do nothing. The effect varies by model, but on a laptop that already runs hot it is a real gain.

Settings that reduce heat generation

Less work means less heat. In FiveM, what pays off most:

• Cap the FPS at a value the machine sustains. Generating 200 frames when the screen shows 60 is pure heat for no benefit
• Extended Distance Scaling at 0% — relieves the GPU considerably
• The city's optimization mode, usually the /fps command

That first one deserves emphasis on a laptop. Capping FPS is the most direct way to reduce heat without losing anything you can perceive.

A laptop-specific detail

Worth checking that the game is using the dedicated graphics card and not the integrated one.

It sounds contradictory in a text about heat, but it matters: running on integrated, the CPU does the GPU's work and heats up even more while delivering less. Two losses at once.

And check the power plan. On laptops there are both Windows profiles and manufacturer ones, and power-saving mode holds back frequency — which reduces heat, but also reduces performance in a way you did not choose.

When it is a physical limit

This has to be said honestly: a thin laptop was not designed for hours of continuous load.

There is a point where the only option is managing it: lower graphics, capped FPS, raised base, and accepting breaks in very long sessions.

That is not a defect. It is the difference between a design made for portability and a load that demands desktop-grade heat dissipation.

The order

1. Confirm it is thermal — does pausing help?
2. Raise the back, and never play on fabric
3. Cap the FPS at what the machine sustains
4. Extended Distance Scaling at 0%
5. Check the GPU and the power plan
6. Clean out the dust
7. Thermal paste, if the machine is a few years old
