Gaming laptops have a problem that desktops don't: thermal throttling. When the CPU or GPU temperature exceeds a safe threshold, the processor automatically reduces its clock speed to prevent damage. The result: FPS drops right in the middle of a fight. And you blame the hardware when it's actually a temperature and power management issue.
What Is Thermal Throttling and How to Identify It
Thermal throttling is the processor's self-protection mechanism. When the CPU reaches ~95-100°C, it reduces its operating frequency to dissipate less heat. A CPU that should run at 4.5GHz can instantly drop to 2.0GHz — that's a massive FPS drop.
How to check if it's happening to you:
- Download HWiNFO64 (free)
- Monitor "CPU Package Power," "CPU Temperature," and "CPU Frequency" during gameplay
- If the frequency drops abruptly alongside a temperature spike, you have thermal throttling
- If the frequency drops but the temperature is normal, it could be power limit throttling
Power Limit Throttling vs Thermal Throttling
Many laptops limit CPU power not because of temperature, but because of a Power Limit (PL) set by the manufacturer. A laptop i7 may have a PL1 of 45W, but the manufacturer sets it to 25W to fit the chassis's thermal profile.

Windows Tweaks for Laptops
Correct Power Plan
Laptops on the "Balanced" or "Power saver" plan aggressively limit both CPU and GPU. Switch to "High Performance" — and in the manufacturer's control panel (Armoury Crate, Dragon Center, etc.), enable Turbo or Performance mode.

GPU Performance Mode
In the NVIDIA/AMD panels for laptops, make sure the dedicated GPU is being used for the game (not the Intel/AMD integrated one). Under Manage Multi-Display GPU, select "Maximum Performance."
Disable Manufacturer Auto-Optimizations
Software like Armoury Crate (ASUS), Dragon Center (MSI), and Predator Sense (Acer) sometimes interfere with performance. Set them to maximum mode and disable "automatic optimization" features that may reduce TDP.
Cleaning and Physical Maintenance
Dried-out thermal paste and dust-clogged fans are the main causes of high temperatures in laptops over 2 years old. If your laptop runs hotter than normal even during simple tasks, consider replacing the thermal paste (or take it to a specialized service center).
