You click to join and the bar crawls. Ten, fifteen minutes downloading content before you appear in the city — and you have good internet.
The frustration makes sense, but the conclusion that "my internet is bad" is almost always wrong. The bottleneck is rarely your connection.
Where that content comes from
Here is the point that changes everything: you are not downloading from a large service built for it. You are downloading from that city's server.
And it is sending to everyone joining at the same time, on whatever bandwidth its owners pay for.
That explains the behaviours that confuse people:
- Fast late at night, slow in the evening — the server is splitting bandwidth between more people
- One city fast, another slow — different infrastructure
- Your 500 Mb connection does not help — the limit is on the other side
Why it sometimes re-downloads everything
If you have joined that city before and it still downloads everything, there is a reason.
The city updated. The most common, and not a problem. When the server adds vehicles or changes the map, the old content no longer matches.
The cache was deleted. By you, or by a cleaning program running without telling you.
The cache overflowed. It stores content from every city you have visited and passes 30 GB easily. When the disk fills, FiveM starts discarding — and you re-download whatever was discarded.
Full disk. With no space there is nowhere to store, so everything is re-downloaded every time.
What actually speeds it up
Free disk space
First item, and the most ignored. If the disk is tight, you will re-download content forever.

Cache on an SSD
It does not change download speed, but it changes everything else: on a mechanical drive, writing hundreds of small files is slow, and reading them during play afterwards is too.
Clear selectively, not everything
When you need space, delete the content of cities you no longer play rather than wiping the whole cache. That way you keep what you already downloaded for your main cities.
Cable instead of Wi-Fi
It helps through stability. A download that drops and reconnects takes longer than a steadier slower one.
What will not help
Upgrading your internet plan. If the limit is the server's bandwidth, you could have 1 Gb and nothing would change.
The test that proves it: if any other download runs fast at the same moment FiveM is crawling, your connection is fine. The bottleneck is the other side.
Download accelerator programs. They cannot accelerate something limited at the source.
How long is normal
Worth setting expectations, because many people think something is broken when everything is fine.
First join on a large city: several minutes is expected. Some cities exceed 10 GB of custom content.
Subsequent joins: should be quick, downloading only what changed. If it still takes long every time, then something is wrong — and the suspect is disk space.
That difference is the main diagnosis: slow the first time is normal, slow every time is not.
The order
- Check free space on the drive holding the cache
- Is it your first join? Then it is expected. Let it finish
- Slow every time? Clear old cities from the cache, not the whole cache
- Test another download at the same moment — separates you from the server
- Cable, for stability
- Try at another hour — server bandwidth varies with how busy it is
