PC for GTA RP: What Actually Matters When Building One

Before buying a graphics card to run FiveM, understand what GTA RP really demands. CPU, RAM and SSD weigh far more than most people assume.

The question almost always arrives in the same shape: "which graphics card should I buy to run GTA RP smoothly?". And the graphics card is almost always the wrong part to focus on.

FiveM does not behave like plain GTA V. It loads hundreds of scripts, syncs dozens of players and processes content the base game never anticipated. That completely changes where the bottleneck sits.

CPU: clock speed matters more than core count

The GTA V engine is old and leans heavily on a single core. FiveM inherits that and piles the city's scripts on top.

In practice: a 6-core processor with high clocks outperforms a 12-core with lower clocks in FiveM. The extra cores help hold everything around it — Discord, browser, OBS — but the game itself lives on that one main core.

That is why so many people buy an expensive processor and see no difference: they bought more cores, not more clock.

RAM: 16 GB is the real floor

There is no middle ground here. A large RP city loads a lot of content into memory, and the maths is simple:

  • 8 GB — works on a small, empty city. In a busy one the system starts using disk as memory and the result is constant stuttering, sometimes the game closing.
  • 16 GB — the comfortable minimum for GTA RP today. Handles a busy city with Discord and a browser open.
  • 32 GB — real headroom for streamers or people who leave a lot open. Does not increase FPS on its own.

One detail worth more than the quantity: running in dual channel. Two 8 GB sticks noticeably outperform a single 16 GB stick, because they double memory bandwidth. Plenty of people have 16 GB on one stick and lose performance without knowing.

SSD: no FPS gain, but a different experience

Being honest here: an SSD will not push your frame counter up. What it does is different and, in RP, arguably more important.

FiveM loads content during the session, not only on join. When you move into a new part of the city, the game reads textures and models from disk right then. On a mechanical drive, that becomes a hitch.

Adding it up: much faster joins, no more loading hitches mid-scene, and room for a cache that can pass 30 GB. It is the part with the best ratio between cost and noticeable difference.

Graphics card: matters less than people think

At 1080p, where most people play, the graphics card is rarely the FiveM bottleneck. A mid-range card from a recent generation already delivers far more frames than the processor can feed it.

That changes in two situations: higher resolutions from 1440p up, and cities with heavy graphics packs, which do exist and are demanding.

Outside those cases, upgrading the card to gain FPS in RP is spending in the wrong place. The test that reveals it is simple: if your card sits at 50% or 60% usage while FPS is dropping, it is not the problem. It is waiting on the processor.

What almost nobody considers

Temperature. RP sessions run for hours. A PC that performs well for twenty minutes and degrades by hour three does not have a configuration problem, it has a thermal one. When the processor gets too hot it reduces its own frequency to protect itself — and since FiveM lives on frequency, the effect is direct.

Laptops. A large share of the RP audience plays on a laptop, and there is an extra catch there: Windows often assigns the game to the integrated graphics even with a dedicated card installed. Worth checking before blaming the hardware.

The maths worth doing before buying

A good share of the PCs we work on did not need a new part. The hardware was already capable of more than it was delivering, and what held it back was configuration: power plan in saving mode, high DPC Latency from a misconfigured driver, dozens of processes competing for the very core FiveM needs.

This is not always the case — 8 GB of RAM in a busy city is a real hardware limit, and no tuning fixes that. But before spending on a graphics card, it is worth finding out whether the bottleneck is the part or Windows.

Telling those two apart takes minutes when someone measures. Without measuring, it is an expensive guess.
