FiveM Desync: Cars Snapping Back and Shots Not Landing

Cars teleporting, shots not registering and players sliding sideways in GTA RP? That is desync. What is yours, what is the server, and what actually fixes it.

You are driving and the car snaps back three metres. You shoot and the damage does not register. Another player slides sideways, gliding, with no walking animation.

That is not low FPS — the image can be perfectly smooth. It is desync: the gap between what happens on your PC and what the server considers true.

How FiveM decides what is real

Understanding this explains every symptom at once.

Your computer simulates the world locally so you do not feel delay — the car moves the instant you accelerate. But the server decides what actually happened.

When the two versions disagree, the server wins. And the correction is what you see:

  • Car snapping back — you advanced, the server did not confirm, and it pulled you back
  • Shots not landing — on your side you hit, on the server's side they had already moved
  • Players sliding — you are receiving their positions late, and the game interpolates between them

Separating what is yours from what is not

This distinction avoids hours of pointless tweaking.

It is yours when: it happens on any city, your ping shows high, and it worsens at peak hours in your household.

It is the server when: it happens to everyone at once, chat fills with complaints simultaneously, and it clears when the city empties.

The most direct test: ask in chat. If half the city is complaining at the same moment, it is not your internet.

What fixes it on your side

Cable instead of Wi-Fi

The single biggest gain, and not for the reason it seems.

It is not average ping dropping — it is ping ceasing to fluctuate. The game compensates for predictable delay; what it cannot compensate for is variation. And variation is exactly what creates the teleporting feeling.

A steady 80 ping is better for RP than one bouncing between 30 and 150.

Close whatever uses the network

Automatic updates starting on their own are the most common cause of spikes. Worth checking that your game store or the system is not downloading mid-session.

A server in your region

Ping is mostly physical distance. A city hosted on another continent has a floor no setting will break through.

What does not fix it

Upgrading your plan's speed. The most common and most useless spend here. Speed is how much passes at once; ping is how long a round trip takes. FiveM uses very little data per second.

What genuinely changes things is the connection type: fibre has far lower latency than radio or satellite. That switch is worth it — for the technology, not the megabit number.

"Network optimizer" programs. Most just close processes, and some make things worse by sitting in the path.

When it is the city

An RP city syncs dozens of players, hundreds of vehicles and every running script. That has a cost, and an undersized or packed server cannot keep up.

The signs: worse at peak hours, better late at night, and everyone feels it together.

In that case there is nothing to adjust on your side. What helps is reporting with useful information — time, how many players online, what was happening — because the team can act on that.

One case that confuses

Low FPS looks like desync but is not.

The difference: if your image is hitching, with the camera stuttering, it is FPS. If the image is smooth and only the positions are wrong, it is network.

Worth checking before touching your internet, because they are completely different paths.

The order

  1. Confirm it is network, not FPS — is the image smooth?
  2. Ask in chat whether others are feeling it
  3. Cable, if possible
  4. Close background downloads
  5. Watch at different hours to separate congestion from distance
