There is one symptom that is almost always misdiagnosed: the PC starts fine, heats up, and FPS drops. People change graphics settings, reinstall drivers, reinstall Windows — and the problem always comes back, because the cause was never in the software.
When the processor or graphics card cross their thermal limit, the hardware itself slows down to avoid damage. This is called thermal throttling, and it is a protection, not a defect. The problem is what you lose along the way.
How to tell it is thermal throttling
Three nearly unmistakable signs:
- The drop is gradual, not instant. You play well for 10, 15, 20 minutes and FPS slowly declines.
- Restarting the game helps for a while. It gets good again, then falls again.
- If the PC rests, it improves. Stopped for 15 minutes and came back good — a clear temperature sign.
If the drop happens in the first seconds or is too abrupt, it probably is not thermal: look at memory, disk or power plan.
Which temperatures are normal
Many people panic over a high number for no reason. In-game reference values:
- Processor: up to 80 °C is normal under load. Between 85 and 90 °C is the attention zone. Above 95 °C, throttling is already happening.
- Graphics card: up to 83 °C is normal, and modern cards work in that range by design. Above 87 °C it starts losing performance.
- Laptop: naturally runs hotter than a desktop. 85 to 90 °C on the processor is common and does not mean a defect — it means little room to dissipate heat.
What matters is not the isolated peak but how long the hardware stays at the limit. Hitting 90 °C for two seconds in a heavy scene is not a problem. Staying at 90 °C for the whole match is.
The causes, most common first
1. Accumulated dust
The absolute champion. Dust builds up on the heatsink fins and forms an insulating blanket. The fan keeps spinning, air keeps flowing — the heat just does not leave. In a normal environment, cleaning every 6 to 12 months solves it.

2. Dried-out thermal paste
The paste between processor and heatsink dries over time. Under heavy use it lasts 2 to 3 years. After that, heat transfer drops sharply and the effect is exactly throttling. On a laptop used for daily gaming, that window is even shorter.
3. Case airflow
Many fans do not help if air has no path. The basics work: intake at the front and bottom, exhaust at the back and top. A case pushed against the wall, with closed glass and no intake, or sitting on carpet pulling dust — all sabotage cooling.
4. Laptop on the wrong surface
Beds, sofas, pillows and laps block the air intakes, which on most laptops are underneath. Any hard surface already changes temperature by several degrees.
5. Conservative fan curve
Graphics cards ship with a quiet curve: the fan only speeds up once it is already hot. Adjusting the curve to ramp earlier trades a little noise for much lower temperatures.
What fixes it, in the right order
- Physical cleaning — the cheapest and the most effective.
- Improve the environment — away from the wall, off the carpet, out of the closed cabinet.
- Adjust the fan curve — free and immediate.
- Replace thermal paste — if the PC has more than two years of heavy use.
- Cap FPS — locking to a value the PC sustains lowers load, temperature and delivers a more consistent game.
- Undervolt — lowering processor or GPU voltage while keeping frequency. The most elegant fix: less heat with the same performance. It requires stability testing, so it comes last.
A detail that confuses many people
Not every performance loss over time is thermal. The Windows power plan also lowers frequency on its own, and the symptom looks very similar. The difference: with a thermal cause, the PC needs to cool down to improve; with the power plan, the oscillation happens all the time, even with a cold machine.
That is why it pays to measure before spending: a stability-under-load reading shows whether the processor is holding a constant pace or oscillating — and that separates the two cases in seconds, without opening the case.

What you lose is performance: above 90 °C on the processor or 87 °C on the graphics card, the hardware is already reducing its own speed.
