When FiveM throws an error, the message almost never tells you what to do — and the same symptom has different causes depending on when it shows up: before launch, while joining the city, or already in game.
This page is an index. Find below what happens on your screen and go straight to the guide that covers that case.
Find your error by what shows on screen
FiveM will not open
- An error message appears before the game opens. There are only a handful of recurring messages, and each has its own cause: find the exact message and its fix.
- "Could not find game executable", or you only own GTA V Enhanced. FiveM still depends on the Legacy build of GTA V: what to do when only Enhanced is installed.
It opens, but you cannot join the city
- Connection error on a specific server. The message changes depending on where the connection stopped: work out which joining error is yours.
- Stuck downloading when joining, and it takes far too long. The city download has bottlenecks of its own, and not all of them are your connection: why the city download drags.
- It downloads everything again every single time. That is the FiveM cache being discarded between sessions: why the city re-downloads from scratch.
You get in and it drops: crashes and freezes
- The game closes on its own mid-session, with or without a message. There is a test that narrows down the possible causes: the test that finds the crash cause.
- It freezes, and it depends on which city you play. Heavy and light servers ask different things from the machine: how the type of city changes the freezing.
- It gets worse after an hour or two and the laptop runs hot. A symptom that only shows up in long sessions is usually thermal: why long sessions make a laptop worse.
You are in, but stuck in limbo or missing textures
- You fall into limbo when joining. It can be your machine or the server, and the two can be told apart: is it your PC or the city?
- You only fall into limbo while driving. The car case has a specific explanation: why it only happens in a vehicle.
- It always happens in the same heavy areas of the map. When the pattern is geographic, the problem is usually not yours: when the problem belongs to the city.
- Flat buildings, detail-free clothing, blurry ground. That has a name and an almost always identical cause: textures that will not load.
Audio and voice
- Nobody hears you, or you hear nobody. Voice symptoms point to different causes: find the cause from your voice symptom.
- Sound drops out mid-game and comes back on its own. Audio cutting out is a different problem with a different origin: sound cutting out and voices failing.
- You installed a sound mod and something broke. It helps to know what the mod touches before installing: how the sound mod works.
Network: high ping and desync
- Cars rubber-banding, shots not landing, players teleporting. That is desync, and it is not the same as low FPS: high ping and desync in FiveM.
Not an error, just performance
- It runs, but with low FPS and stutter. The general FiveM optimization guide: how to optimize FiveM on PC.
- You heard swapping the citizen gives more FPS. It does, but less than people claim: how much the citizen actually gains.
- You want to swap the citizen and do not know how. The steps and the risk nobody mentions: how to replace the FiveM citizen.
- You need FPS at any cost, even if it looks rough. That is what potato mode is for: what it is and when it is worth enabling.
- You are considering new parts because of RP. Not every part helps in GTA RP: where to spend and where the GPU will not help.
- It stutters when you record or stream. Recording bills the same machine that plays: how to record and stream without stuttering.
If you have been through several of these guides and the problem keeps coming back, the bottleneck is usually the system rather than FiveM. That is the kind of case PC optimization for FiveM handles live, with you watching the screen.
